How to Customize Your iPad – part III

Side Switch Functions
The functions of the side switch have changed over the years. When the first iPad was released, the side switch was an orientation lock, which could be used to lock the screen when you were reading a book. But then, thanks to a software update its functionality was altered and it became a mute switch, just like the one on the iPhone.
But since this change made a lot of users unhappy, starting from iOS 4.3 and beyond you can choose the functionality of your iPad’s side switch.
All you have to do is:
1.Tap the Settings icon in the Home screen and then General.
2.If you want your side switch to be an orientation lock, choose Lock Rotation.
3.Choose Mute if you want the side switch to have a mute function.
Time and Date
This is when you have to set the date, time and time zone for your tablet and you can even pick between the 12- or 24-hour mode.
1.Go the Home Screen and tap the Settings icon.
2.Tap General and then Time & Date.
3.Set the 24-hour time switch to on or off, depending on your preference.
4.If you want to sync the time and date with the Wi-Fi network that your iPad is currently connected to, you can do so by turning on Set Automatically.
5.In order to set the zone, you must tap the Time Zone button and then enter the name of your city or, if you can’t find it, the name of a nearby city.
6.You must tap the Set Date & Time button to bring up date and time controls.
7.In order to bring the bottom of the control to the correct interface you must tap either the date or the time at the top of the control.
Keyboard Settings
If you get a lot of writing done on your iPad, then the on-screen keyboard is the most used item on your tablet.
There are things on it that can make it easier for you to type, but then again, they might make it difficult, but it all really depends on your writing style. You can use the following steps to make the keyboard suit your needs:
1.Tap the Settings icon on the Home screen.
2.Tap General and then Keyboard.
3.If you want the first character of a name or a sentence to automatically become a capital letter you may turn Auto-Capitalization on.
4.Turn Auto-Correction on if you want to have mistyped words automatically corrected.
5.Do you want misspellings to be indicated? It’s up to you, just turn Check Spelling on or off.
6.By default, Caps Lock is disabled, but you can turn it on if you want, just remember to double-tap the shift key to lock it.
7.By turning on the “.” Shortcut you will be able to double-tap the spacebar in order to insert a period followed by a space.
8.If you want to choose a different keyboard layout you can do so by using the International Keyboards button. You will then be able to pick the one you need from keyboards commonly used in other countries and you will also be able to use several other alternatives to the traditional QWERTY keyboard, like the Dvorak keyboard.
9.If you want to stop other people from splitting or moving your keyboard from its original position you must switch the Split Keyboard button to off.
10.By switching Dictation on or off you will make the dictation button appear or disappear from the standard on-screen keyboard.
11.You can even add your own shortcuts. Let me give you an example: If you type “omw” it will instantly expand to “On my way!”. But you can create your own shortcuts for things you write the most often!
Safari Settings
You can customize Safari from the Settings app, all you have to do is:
1.Tap the Settings icon in the Home screen.
2.From the list of settings on the left tap Safari.
3.Select your favorite search engine. Google is set by default, but there are others you can choose.
4.You will probably be filling out forms on the Internet so you need to adjust your Auto-Fill settings. If you want Safari to remember your usernames and passwords for websites you have to turn Names and Passwords to on.
5.When you open a new tab do you want the browser to switch to it immediately or just open it in the background?
6.Do you want to see the Bookmark bar all the time or just when it has something to show (saved bookmarks)?
7.If you want your browser to check websites against a public database in order to block the ones that need to be avoided, you have to turn Fraud Warning on.
Music Settings
When it comes to playing music, there are a few settings you can choose from. In most part, they are all about setting the quality and volume of the sound.
1.Tap the Settings icon in the Home Screen.
2.From the list of settings on the left choose Music.
3.If you want to play your music at approximately the same level every time, then you must turn Sound Check on. This way every song will have the same volume, no matter if it’s soft or loud in original format.
4.Use EQ to select an equalizer setting you like or one that is appropriate for the current song. I think there is one for each type of music.
5.If you want to set the maximum volume limit, you have to tap the Volume Limit button.
6.In order to set the limit all you have to do is move the slider.
7.If you are sharing your iPad with other people and you don’t want them to change the volume limit, you can tap the Lock Volume Limit button to set a code.
8.Enter the four digit code and then confirm.
9.You can also turn iTunes Match on by tapping the button with the same name. This way you will activate a service, which will store all of your music on Apple’s servers. You will only be able to access it through iTunes or the Music app.
10.Want to stream videos and music from your Mac? Enter your Apple ID and password.
